Estimating the amount of alcoholic beverages to serve at your wedding on Maui can be difficult to figure out. Be it beer, wine, your favorite signature cocktail or other alcoholic libations, you wont want to run out of the beverages youve chosen to serve at your wedding reception.
Since Maui is a tropical destination wedding location the estimates are likely to be elevated in comparison to what you might anticipate serving at mainland wedding venues. Still, a few traditional event planning general rules of thumb will help:
General event planning guidelines edict consumption of alcohol is unlikely to be significantly greater than the rate humans are able to metabolize alcohol. Meaning, since the human body metabolizes alcohol at the rate of one ounce per hour on average, most people will only consume one alcoholic beverage per hour. Some may imbibe more than others but their consumption will be averaged by the non and lite drinkers.
How to Determine the Amount of Alcohol to Purchase for a Catered Event
Estimating the amount of alcohol likely to be consumed during the wedding and reception can be accomplished by multiplying the guest count by the average amount of consumption per person and the duration of the event. Along with the guest count, the specific quantities of alcohol to purchase will be dependent on what we are serving.
For example, a 750 ml bottle of wine will pour 5 (148 ml) wine glasses while being sold in cases of 12 bottles. Beer is typically sold in 12 ounce cans and bottles in cases of 24. Champagne bottles are 750 ml, the same as wine bottle. A wine flute is about half the size of most wine glasses and will hold approximately 7 oz. of bubbly if filled.
How Much of Each to Purchase
Were you hoping to get more precise in terms of guest count vs. how much of each type of alcohol to purchase? OK, we can help with that level of wedding planning. Suppose your guest count is 50 people (note most Maui weddings average between 40 to 60 guests), based on the above estimates of consumption, youll want to purchase the following amounts of alcohol:
18 bottles of white wine (5 wine glass servings per bottle; 90 servings)
12 bottles of red wine (5 wine glass servings per bottle; 60 servings)
2.5 cases of beer (60 servings total)
4 bottles of champagne (10 flutes half filled per bottle; 40 servings) for the toast
For a sunset wedding or other evening event on Maui with 50 guests attending, youd want to plan for 250 servings. based on 50 people consuming 5 beverages each over the course of the 5 hour event.
Compliment the wedding beverage service with non-alcoholic such as water, juice and soda.
