Why get married on Maui (or any other island destination wedding location)? To answer this question for couples thinking about a destination wedding on Maui, we surveyed more than 50 catered Maui wedding couples to find out why they decided on a destination wedding and selected Maui as their island destination wedding location:
- My dream was to get married on a tropical island! I wanted my island wedding to include palm trees swaying in gentle trade winds scented by the sweet aroma from the fresh tropical flowers while the sun sets into the ocean. – The number one reason couples answered when asked ‘Why get married in Maui’? - Out Maui wedding and reception expenses were less than a large wedding at home – With the abundant natural beauty of tropical island Maui, an outdoor beachfront wedding won’t require expensive wedding venue accessories. An ocean view or beach front wedding venue, fresh tropical flowers, a bamboo wedding chuppah, chairs for guests and tables for the wedding reception are about all that is necessary for an unforgettable Maui wedding. Exotic flowers are more spectacular, widely available, and less expensive mainland wedding florist fees.
- We had more time to spend together with our family and friends – Since many attendees of destination weddings combine their own vacation with attending your wedding, you are more likely to have opportunity to spend time together. Rather than guests showing up at a wedding and reception, most weddings on Maui include getting together before the day of the wedding and often a day after brunch. In addition to scheduling a few group activities together, we suggest a bbq dinner as a rehearsal dinner or a couple days before the ceremony if you prefer more traditional rehearsal dinner with only wedding party members. We also recommend considering a day after wedding brunch for your wedding attendees. A bunch the day after the wedding gives you one more opportunity to spend time with your guests before they depart for home or if you are departing for an off Maui honeymoon destination.
- We wanted our wedding to be less formal than a traditional wedding in our hometown. We wanted a casual wedding and wedding reception for both ourselves and for our guests – Most weddings in Hawaii are less formal than mainland weddings. Though not unusual to wear a traditional wedding dress and formal tuxedo for a destination wedding, more often couples opt for a less formal relaxed tropical style for their wedding on Maui. Many brides wear a sundress while gentlemen dress in pair of khaki or black shorts with white linen shirts. Since one of the popular wedding trends for 2012 is for bridal party members to wear non matched clothing, the girls in your bridal party will be happy to not have to purchase (or wear?) yet another wear once ‘prom dress’.
