Last weekend a film crew suddenly found themselves without catering for the next day’s scheduled shoot at Honolua Bay. A CBS film crew was on Maui to shoot scenes for an upcoming episode of CBS’s popular Hawaii Five-0 television series. Most people think film and TV crews live a glamorous lifestyle. Though I’ve provided catering for many other film crews shooting on Maui, I’m always impressed with the hard working enthusiastic gals and guys comprising the production crews. They dedicate themselves to the magic of their craft creating what is eventually seen on television or the big screen. Knowing how hard film crews work, I was thrilled to share our Maui aloha and thankful for the opportunity to provide catering services for the visiting Hawaii Five-0 film crew!
It all started last Friday afternoon when I answered a frantic call from a set director asking if there is any chance my Maui catering company would be available on last second notice to supply a full day of catering for a film crew during a scheduled on location shoot the next day. The shooting was scheduled to begin early Saturday, just after dawn. I would need to have a catered breakfast available on location at Honolua Bay before the crew begins their day filming scenes for an upcoming episode of Hawaii Five-0. Unfortunate events left the visiting film crew scrambling to locate a catering company on Maui to replace the caterer originally scheduled and contracted for the shoot. Not only did the crew need to find a caterer on Maui available the next day, they needed to get the catering company added to their Maui county film permit before the county’s 5 pm Friday afternoon weekend closing time!
Fortunately, I had a rare Saturday available in my catering schedule and agreed to accept the catering challenge! The film crew was successful getting my catering business added to their permit and we were set to go. The film crew director and I quickly coordinated the menu and other last second details. After catering a wedding reception dinner at a Lahaina private estate the evening before, my loyal catering staff and I arrived back in my restaurant Saturday morning just after 4 am. Prior to CJ’s Deli & Diner opening for breakfast at 7 am, we needed to utilize my catering kitchen to prepare the breakfast service we would be serving to the film crew before their shoot.
A couple hours later, we were on location and set up prior to 7 am, ready to serve a hot breakfast to the 95 member film crew and staff on location at Honolua Bay. The hearty catered breakfast menu featured piping hot Breakfast Wraps, New Potatoes, Bacon and Sausages. The breakfast service included hot coffee and chilled juice along with a selection of fresh baked pastries and assorted fresh tropical fruits.
After breakfast, my catering staff and I returned to the restaurant to quickly prepare the catered lunch we would serve to 95 member visiting film crew and staff. Knowing the crew would be hungry after a morning of hard work, I had designed a healthy hearty lunch with an ample supply of carbohydrates intended to supply them the energy needed to get through the afternoon filming in the hot sun. The film crew catered lunch menu included Caesar Salad; Garlic Bread; Chicken Masala; Steak Barolo; Artichoke Salad; Fresh Pesto Pasta and Garlic Green Beans. For dessert, the visiting film crew and staff enjoyed Amaretto Mango Cheese Cake.
